Why Do Shower Floors Have Small Tiles on the Floor?

September 14, 2021 by Bill Ramsey

I recently finished another master bathroom remodel (that is: completely tear out the old and replace with new) for Lisa. As I installed the killer new marble hexagon floor, I remembered a question recently posed to me: “Why do shower floors always have small tiles on them?”

It’s a good question! As I’ve coached clients about their tile selections, I’ve steered several away from the large tiles they love on the walls–or on the floor outside of the shower. This video explains why.

Spoiler alert: The floor outside of your shower is flat. The floor inside your shower, curved. Small tiles can “roll” with a curve, whereas large ones cannot.

Questions? Comments? Ping me here through the site. Cheers!
